GATE Exam 2022: Exam Dates,Registration, Eligibility, Preparation, Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Result and Counselling

What is GATE 2023 Exam Date?

GATE 2023: IIT Kanpur is scheduled to release GATE 2023 Application Form on August 30, 2022. As per GATE Eligibility Criteria, a candidate who is currently in the third year of their graduation or has completed their graduation is eligible to apply for the exam. The last date to register for GATE 2023 without any late fee is September 30, 2022. Candidates can apply online at gate.iitk.ac.in through GATE Login (GOAPS). There has been an increase in GATE 2023 Application Fee. Female/ SC/ ST/ PwD candidates are now required to pay Rs. 850 while all other candidates are required to pay Rs. 1700 as GATE Application Fee.

GATE 2023 Exam Dates are February 4, 5, 11 and 12, 2023. The conducting body for GATE 2023 is IIT Kanpur. The exam is scheduled to be conducted at exam centers in India and outside India. IIT Kanpur has released GATE 2023 Notification on July 27, 2022 along with the exam dates, registration dates, updated syllabus and exam pattern.

  • IIT Kharagpur has released paper-wise GATE 2022 Mock Tests on the official website at iitkgp.ac.in.
  • Two new papers have been added to the list of GATE 2022 papers- Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering (NM) and Geomatics Engineering (GE).
  • No new changes have been made to GATE 2022 Syllabus. However, GATE Exam Pattern for Architecture and Planning (AR) has been revised.
  • GATE 2022 will be conducted online as a 3-hour computer-based test. There will be 65 questions (MCQs, MSQs and NATs) with a total weightage of 100 marks.
  • International GATE Exam Centers have been cancelled this year due to COVID-19. International candidates can instead appear for GATE 2022 at centers in India.  

What is GATE exam? GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is a national-level entrance test conducted by IISc Banglore and seven IITs (at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of NCB-GATE for admission to postgraduate engineering (ME/ M.Tech) or research courses at top colleges in India such as IITs, NITs, IIITs, etc. and for PSU recruitment (at BHEL, GAIL, HAL, IOCL, NTPC, ONGC, PGCI, etc.).

GATE 2022: What’s New!

  • Two new papers added to the list of GATE 2022 papers. Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering (NM) and Geomatics Engineering (GE) have been added as the two new papers.
  • GATE 2022 Eligibility Criteria has been expanded allowing BDS and M.Pharma degree candidates to apply for the exam. Check GATE 2022 Eligibility Criteria
  • Leh (Ladakh)​ has been added as a new exam city to the list of existing GATE Exam Center list. Additionally, international exam centers have been cancelled. GATE 2022 will not be held at international centers due to COVID-19.   • GATE 2022 Exam Pattern for Architecture and Planning has been revised. The paper will contain two sections- General Aptitude (for 15 marks) and Core Subject further divided into Part A (for 60 marks mandatory for everyone) and Part B (for 25 marks with two optional sections- Part B1 (Architecture) and Part B2 (Planning)). Candidates have to choose one of the two parts from Part B during the exam.
  • The Two-Paper Combination introduced last year (allowing candidates to appear for a second GATE paper) has been revised providing more options for candidates to choose from. Check GATE 2022 Two-Paper Combination
  • NCB-GATE has also stated that all the benefits given to candidates in GATE 2021 will be continued in 2022 as well. 

Changes Introduced in GATE 2021

There were a number of changes that had been introduced in GATE 2021. All the changes that had been introduced are being followed this year too. Major introductions include:

  • Two new subjects- had been introduced in GATE 2021- Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) and Humanities and Social Science (XS).
  • Eligibility for GATE 2021 had been relaxed allowing candidates in the third/ final year of their graduation to apply for the exam.
  • GATE exam pattern had also been revised and the new pattern allowed a candidate to sit for a maximum of two papers. An updated list of combinations of papers had been released from which candidates could select two papers.
  • GATE Syllabus for all 25 papers had been revised. 
  • GATE 2021 exam dates were spread over a longer period of time considering the COVID-19 situation. 
  • 11 new GATE Exam Centers had been added in cities such as Shirdi, Latur, Akola, Dhule, etc.

GATE 2022: What to Expect?

  • IIT Kharagpur last conducted GATE exam in the year 2014, 2006, 2000, 1994 and 1988. Based on the exam analysis for the years, the overall difficulty levels of the exam were concluded to be moderate. However, since all the participating IITs and IISc are collectively responsible for preparing the question papers, students must make sure to prepare well for the exam. Check GATE Preparation Tips
  • It was also seen that the questions in the exam were majorly numerical type. Therefore students can expect more numerical-type questions. Candidates who appeared for the exam in 2014 also reported that an analytical approach was required to solve the question paper with an in-depth knowledge of concepts. 
  • With more number of numerical type questions, students reported that the exam was time-consuming. It is therefore recommended that students preparing for GATE 2022 must work on their calculations and speed. 
  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) in GATE 2021 papers were zero or very less in number. However, according to experts, the number of MSQs in GATE 2022 is expected to gradually increase similar to the pattern when NATs were initially introduced.

GATE 2022 Admit Card

  • GATE 2022 Admit Card will be released on January 3, 2022 (Monday) for successfully registered candidates. Candidates can download their GATE hall ticket through the GOAPS portal on the official website- gate.iitkgp.ac.in.
  • GATE 2022 Admit Card is a mandatory document to be carried to the exam center on the day of exam.

Students can download their GATE 2022 Admit Card by following the simple steps: 

    • Visit the official website gate.iitkgp.ac.in
    • Enter your GATE Enrollment ID and Password and click Submit.
    • Click on the link available to download the GATE Admit Card
    • Download and take a coloured printout of the document
    • Check for any discrepancies, if any.

GATE 2022 Exam Schedule

  • Candidates are advised to reach their exam center with their GATE 2022 Admit Card and photo-ID proof well before their time slot.

  • GATE 2022 Exam Centers are divided into 8 zones. IISc Bangalore and 7 IITs act as 8 zonal GATE offices that administer the operations in these exam cities.
  • IIT Kharagpur has cancelled 3 exam cities this year, namely, Sonepat, Panipat and Idukki while Leh (Ladakh) has been added as a new exam city this year. 
  • GATE exam is to be held at 200+ exam centers across India.
  • Due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic, GATE 2022 will not be conducted at international centers. International applicants can appear for the exam at cities in India.

GATE Exam Pattern

GATE 2022 Exam Pattern

  • No changes have been made to GATE 2022 Exam Pattern, except for the revision of the Architecture and Planning exam pattern this year.
  • GATE exam is held as a computer-based entrance test for a duration of 3 hours (180 minutes) with a total weightage of 100 marks.
  • With the introduction of two new papers- Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering (NM) and Geomatics Engineering (GE), the total number of GATE 2022 Papers is 29.
  • GATE 2022 Question Paper will consist of 65 questions- 10 questions in the General Aptitude section and 55 questions in the Core Discipline section.
  • The questions asked in GATE 2022 are of three types- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ); Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT).
  • Each correct answer will be awarded 1 or 2 marks depending on the type of question. While each incorrect MCQ will lead to a deduction in the marks. 
    • 1 mark MCQs: ⅓ mark deducted for each wrong answer
    • 2 marks MCQs: ⅔ mark deducted for each wrong answer
  • There is no negative marking for MSQs and NATs.

GATE 2022 Syllabus

  • No changes have been made to GATE 2022 syllabus released by the authorities along with the official notification apart from the addition of the syllabus for two papers- Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering (NM) and Geomatics Engineering (GE).
  • GATE 2022 Syllabus can be divided into two major sections- the General Aptitude (GA) section with a weightage of 15 marks and the Core Discipline with a weightage of 85 marks.

GATE 2021 Paper-wise Qualifying Statistics

In GATE 2021, candidates for Geology and Geophysics (GG) paper had the highest qualifying percentage with 31.84% candidates qualifying Geophysics and 24.74% for Geology. GATE papers with the highest number of applicants such as CS, EE, ME had a qualifying percentage of 17.13%, 17.7% and 17.38% respectively.

GATE 2022 Counselling

IIT Kharagpur will not organize any counselling process for M.Tech admissions. Candidates seeking admissions in IITs, NITs and other prestigious institutions will have to participate in counselling process conducted by separate bodies.

  • For admissions into NITs candidates need to register for GATE CCMT Counselling. Usually, the counselling process starts in the month of April.
  • For admissions into IITs, candidates need to register for GATE COAP Counselling. Aspirants will need to apply to individual institutes where admission is desired and eventually, register for Common Offer Acceptance Portal.

GATE CCMT 2022

  • GATE CCMT refers to Centralized Counseling for M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan/M.Des.
  • GATE CCMT is a centralized counselling process conducted for admission to participating NITs, IIITs, CFTIs and IIEST Shibpur.
  • Candidates need not apply to desired NIT separately.
  • Candidates with a valid GATE score card (2020/2021/2022) can register for CCMT 2022.
  • GATE CCMT Cutoff for NITs is released by the organizing institute in the form of opening and closing ranks.

GATE COAP 2022

  • COAP refers to Common Offer Acceptance Portal.
  • GATE COAP 2022 is a window where all Participating Institutes / PSU's upload their admission/ job offers.
  • Under COAP 2022, the seats are offered based on GATE scores, cut off, and the preferences filled by the candidate.
  • Candidates who wish to accept the seats need to complete the process by logging in to the institute portal, submit fees, and the mandatory documents.
  • Unlike GATE CCMT, candidates who register for COAP 2022 also need to individually apply to the desired IIT for M.Tech admission.

GATE 2022 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates planning to appear for GATE 2022 must refer to the detailed eligibility criteria before applying. IIT Kharagpur has expanded GATE 2022 Eligibility Criteria. 

  • As per the expanded GATE 2022 Eligibility Criteria, candidates with a degree in BDS. M.Pharma are also eligible to apply for the exam. 
  • The minimum qualification needed for the candidates to give the exam is 10+2+3 allowing final year undergraduate students to also appear for the test.
  • Candidates who have passed or pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Arts/ Commerce or Post Graduation in a relevant discipline will be considered eligible for the course.
  • There is no upper age limit to apply for GATE 2022.

GATE 2022 Eligibility Criteria for International Students

  • International students living in countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Shri Lanka, Singapore, Ethiopia and United Arab Emirates (UAE) can also appear for GATE 2022.
  • Such students must have completed or pursuing final year studies or in the pre-final year of their bachelor’s degree in engineering and technology or equivalent.
  • However, international candidates can appear for the exam centers in cities only in India. GATE 2022 will not be held at any international exam center because of COVID-19 pandemic

GATE 2022 Notification

  • GATE 2022 Notification has been released on July 31, 2021 along with the official website, brochure and syllabus.
  • IIT Kharagpur had already announced GATE 2022 Exam Dates earlier. The exam is scheduled to be held on February 5-6 and 12-13, 2022.
  • Last year, IIT Bombay had released GATE 2021 notification on July 26, 2020, i.e., the last Sunday of July while the previous year GATE notifications have also been released in the month of July.  

GATE 2022 Organizing Institute (OI)

  • GATE 2022 is being conducted by IIT Kharagpur. The new chairperson for GATE 2022 is the Director of IIT Kharagpur, Professor Virendra Kumar Tewari.
  • Each year GATE is organized by any one of the eight institutes- IISc Banglore and seven IITs (Madras, Delhi, Bombay, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee, Guwahati).
  • The organizing Institute (OI) is responsible for coordination among these administering institutes. 
  • Previously, IIT Kharagpur has conducted GATE exam in 1988, 1994, 2000, 2006, 2014.

Ques. When will GATE 2022 be conducted?

Ans. IIT Kharagpur has released GATE 2022 Exam Dates and examination schedule. GATE 2022 is scheduled from February 5-6 and 12-13, 2022. Ques. Will GATE 2022 be postponed?

Ans. No. As per the previous year trends, there is no possibility of postponing GATE 2022. IIT Kharagpur will be conducting the exam keeping in mind the safety of all candidates and all the required precautions will be taken to prevent spread of COVID-19 just like GATE 2021.


Ques. Can I apply for GATE 2022 now?

Ans: No. GATE 2022 Registrations are already closed. IIT Kharagpur had released GATE 2022 application form on September 2, 2022 while the last date to register without any late fee was September 30, 2021.


Ques. When will GATE 2022 Admit Card be released?

Ques. Who is eligible to apply for GATE 2022?

Ans. According to GATE 2022 eligibility criteria, apart from graduates, candidates currently in their 3rd year of graduation are also eligible to apply. Candidates must have cleared the required degree for a recognized institute to be eligible for the exam. Ques. I am planning to give GATE 2022 exam, for how many papers can I apply for?

Ques. What is considered to be a good rank in GATE exam?

Ans. For admission to top IITs, GATE rank below 200 can be considered as a good GATE rank. However, candidates with rank ranging from 600-800 can also get admission to IITs and IIITs. For admission to NITs, GATE rank ranging from 350-800 can be considered good.


Ques. How can I prepare for GATE 2022?

Ques. For how long will GATE 2022 scorecard be available for download?

Ans: Qualified GATE 2022 candidates will be able to download their scorecards free of cost between March 21, 2022 to May 31, 2022 from the GATE 2022 website. However, a fee of Rs 500 will be required to download the softcopy till December 31, 2022. No candidate will be able to download GATE 2022 Scorecard from January 1, 2023.


Ques. What is the difference between GATE Marks and Scores?

Ques. What is the process of GATE 2022 Counselling?

Ans. Conducting Body for GATE does not conduct the counselling process for candidates. Instead, there are separate counselling processes followed by GATE-qualified candidates. These are:

  • CCMT: Conducted for admission to NITs across India by one of the participating colleges.
  • COAP: Conducted for admission to IITs and PSU recruitment conducted by one of the participating IITs.
